Tom Dempsey was the first person to make a 63 yard field goal in an NFL game.  He kicked the game winning field goal for the New Orleans Saints against the Detroit Lions on November 8, 1970. Dempsey held the record for 28 years until Jason Elam kicked a 63 yard field goal for the Denver Broncos against the Jacksonville Jaguars on October 25, 1998. Tom Dempsey, Jason Elam, Sebastian Janikowski, and David Akers are all tied for the record of longest field goal in an NFL game.
